A teaching tape for SR-11, moving mirror reflection

moving mirror reflection

Teaching tape demonstrating frequency shift, aberration, radiation pressure, and energy balance for reflection from a moving mirror.

Where it starts

The settings the tape begins from, under the constant set modern-si-2019. Values are the model's own, not the laboratory control's display: a radius of 5e-7 is half a micrometre.
SettingValue
Mirror speed ratio (v/c) (beta)0.6
Incident angle (incidentAngleDeg)0
Incident energy density (incidentEnergyDensity)1
Mirror surface area (mirrorArea)1

What it changes, and what to expect

  1. Set Mirror speed ratio (v/c) (beta) to 0.6 changes what the run starts from

    receding-mirror-0.6c

Light hitting a receding mirror at 0.6c returns with frequency ratio 0.25, while mechanical work P*v*Am = 0.3*I*Am accounts exactly for the energy lost by the radiation.

These are the values the tape's author recorded, not a result this page computed. Nothing here runs the instrument. Open SR-11 with these settings: the link opens it with them already in place. Compare what it gives you with what is recorded here. The settings travel in the link and the laboratory reads them as it loads, so without JavaScript it opens at its worked example instead.
