[p. 139]Aus den bisherigen Beobachtungen über die „schwarze Strahlung“ geht zwar hervor, daß das ursprünglich von Hrn. W. Wien für die „schwarze Strahlung“ aufgestellte GesetzSpectral energy densitySpectral constant AFrequency of the lightSpectral constant BTemperature of the radiationExplain this equation nicht genau gültig ist. Dasselbe wurde aber für große Werte von sehr vollkommen durch das Experiment bestätigt. Wir legen diese Formel unseren Rechnungen zugrunde, behalten aber im Sinne, daß unsere Resultate nur innerhalb gewisser Grenzen gelten.

It does follow, to be sure, from the observations of “black radiation” so far that the law originally set up by Mr. W. Wien for “black radiation” Spectral energy densitySpectral constant AFrequency of the lightSpectral constant BTemperature of the radiationExplain this equation is not exactly valid. But for large values of it has been confirmed very completely by experiment. We take this formula as the basis of our calculations, but bear in mind that our results hold only within certain limits.

[p. 139]Aus dieser Formel ergibt sich zunächst:Temperature of the radiationSpectral constant BFrequency of the lightSpectral energy densitySpectral constant AExplain this equation und weiter unter Benutzung der in dem vorigen Paragraphen gefundenen Beziehung:Spectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityFrequency of the lightSpectral constant BSpectral constant AExplain this equation Es sei nun eine Strahlung von der Energie gegeben, deren Frequenz zwischen und liegt. Die Strahlung nehme das Volumen ein. Die Entropie dieser Strahlung ist:Radiation entropyVolumeSpectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityFrequency of the lightRadiation energy in the bandSpectral constant BSpectral constant AExplain this equation Beschränken wir uns darauf, die Abhängigkeit der Entropie von dem von der Strahlung eingenommenen Volumen zu untersuchen, und bezeichnen wir die Entropie der Strahlung mit , falls dieselbe das Volumen besitzt, so erhalten wir:Radiation entropyRadiation entropyRadiation energy in the bandSpectral constant BFrequency of the lightVolumeVolumeExplain this equation

From this formula there follows first: Temperature of the radiationSpectral constant BFrequency of the lightSpectral energy densitySpectral constant AExplain this equation and further, using the relation found in the preceding section: Spectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityFrequency of the lightSpectral constant BSpectral constant AExplain this equation Now let there be given a radiation of energy whose frequency lies between and . Let the radiation occupy the volume . The entropy of this radiation is: Radiation entropyVolumeSpectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityFrequency of the lightRadiation energy in the bandSpectral constant BSpectral constant AExplain this equation If we confine ourselves to investigating the dependence of the entropy on the volume occupied by the radiation, and denote by the entropy of the radiation when it has the volume , we obtain: Radiation entropyRadiation entropyRadiation energy in the bandSpectral constant BFrequency of the lightVolumeVolumeExplain this equation

This equation shows that the entropy of a monochromatic radiation of sufficiently small density varies with the volume according to the same law as the entropy of an ideal gas or that of a dilute solution. The equation just found will be interpreted in what follows on the basis of the principle introduced into physics by Mr. Boltzmann, according to which the entropy of a system is a function of the probability of its state.
