Let there be given a radiation that occupies the volume vv. We assume that the perceptible properties of the radiation in question are completely determined when the radiation density ϱ(ν)\varrho(\nu) is given for all frequencies.[1)] Since radiations of different frequencies are to be regarded as separable from one another without the performance of work and without the supply of heat, the entropy of the radiation can be represented in the form S=v∫0∞φ(ϱ,ν)dνS = v \int_0^\infty \varphi(\varrho, \nu) d \nuRadiation entropyVolumeSpectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityFrequency of the lightExplain this equation where φ\varphi denotes a function of the variables ϱ\varrho and ν\nu. φ\varphi can be reduced to a function of only one variable by formulating the statement that the entropy of a radiation is not changed by its adiabatic compression between reflecting walls. We shall not go into this, however, but shall at once investigate how the function φ\varphi can be determined from the radiation law of the black body.

In “black radiation”, ϱ\varrho is such a function of ν\nu that the entropy is a maximum for a given energy, i.e., that δ∫0∞φ(ϱ,ν)dν=0,\delta \int_0^\infty \varphi(\varrho, \nu) d \nu = 0,Spectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityFrequency of the lightExplain this equation if δ∫0∞ϱdν=0.\delta \int_0^\infty \varrho d \nu = 0.Spectral energy densityFrequency of the lightExplain this equation From this it follows that for every choice of δϱ\delta \varrho as a function of ν\nu ∫0∞(∂φ∂ϱ−λ)δϱdν=0,\int_0^\infty \left( \frac{\partial \varphi}{\partial \varrho} - \lambda \right) \delta \varrho d \nu = 0,Spectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityLagrange multiplierFrequency of the lightExplain this equation where λ\lambda is independent of ν\nu. In black radiation, therefore, ∂φ/∂ϱ\partial \varphi / \partial \varrho is independent of ν\nu.

English

For the increase in temperature of a black radiation of volume v=1v = 1 by dTd T, the following equation holds: dS=∫ν=0ν=∞∂φ∂ϱdϱdν,d S = \int_{\nu = 0}^{\nu = \infty} \frac{\partial \varphi}{\partial \varrho} d \varrho d \nu,Radiation entropyFrequency of the lightSpectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityExplain this equation or, since ∂φ/∂ϱ\partial \varphi / \partial \varrho is independent of ν\nu: dS=∂φ∂ϱdE.d S = \frac{\partial \varphi}{\partial \varrho} d E.Radiation entropySpectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityRadiation energy in the bandExplain this equation Since dEd E is equal to the heat supplied and the process is reversible, we also have: dS=1TdE.d S = \frac{1}{T} d E.Radiation entropyTemperature of the radiationRadiation energy in the bandExplain this equation By comparison one obtains: ∂φ∂ϱ=1T.\frac{\partial \varphi}{\partial \varrho} = \frac{1}{T}.Spectral entropy densitySpectral energy densityTemperature of the radiationExplain this equation This is the law of black radiation. One can therefore determine the law of black radiation from the function φ\varphi and, conversely, the function φ\varphi from the latter by integration, bearing in mind that φ\varphi vanishes for ϱ=0\varrho = 0.
